Our Most Epic Show Yet?

May 4th, 2016

We’ve certainly been keeping busy. Last month, we were in New York for the second edition of The Nerdlesque Festival.

We also just wrapped our amazing video game themed show, Achievement Undressed. There’s a bunch of photos from that show up on our new Instagram account, go check them out.

Looking forward, we have a big and exciting co-production coming up in just a month’s time.

Revenge of the Strip - Banner 2

On June 4, 2016 we are very pleased to present Revenge of The Strip: A Star Wars Burlesque Tribute alongside our friends PeepshowTO & Zilly Lilly. This is our first co-production with these lovely people (though we do often work together) and we’re just as pleased as punch about it.

This show is something we’ve all wanted to do for a few years now, but with the recent release of The Force Awakens, it just felt like the timing was right. (Indeed, the production actually grew out of a discussion between Betty Quirk, Sevvy Skellington, and Loretta Jean when they were in line to see Episode VII on opening night.)

In true co-production fashion, our host Reddy will be joined on stage with PeepshowTO’s host, Velvet Valhalla.

We have also assembled an amazing cast truly worthy of such an epic show. We’ll be posting lots more photos and progress shots leading up to the show on our various social media accounts, so keep your eyes on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts (there are links on the bottom navigation bar below).

For now, here’s a few tasty teasers. Will you run with the Rebels, or join the Dark Side?

This was an outtake from our poster shoot with Lick My Lens Cap, but Charlie Quinn is such a babely Storm Trooper that we couldn’t resist making it into our May the Fourth greeting to you.

Tassels & Tabletop moves to Handlebar!

November 24th, 2014

Hey NGB Fans, we’ve been having a busy autumn season!

Nerd Girl Burlesque has travelled far and wide – to Michigan and back – twice! First we went for the Michigan Burlesque Festival in Detroit, and a second time for Pick a Card in Ann Arbor. Locally, we brought our monthly show, Tassels and Tabletop back for a spooky Halloween edition, joined our friends from PeepshowTO on stage for their last show, Garters of the Galaxy, and also shimmy-shaked our way through a number of individual performances.

Tassels and Tabletop is a unique event – it’s part burlesque show, part board gaming night, and part pub and social night. We’ve had much success at the venues we’ve used before, but haven’t quite found the perfect fit yet to accommodate the niche we’ve carved out for ourselves and our dedicated and awesome audience.

We decided to to the month of November off of producing this monthly event, in order to regroup and focus our energies into finding a new space – and we’re very happy to announce that we think we’ve found what we’ve been looking for!

Nerd Girl Burlesque at Handlebar

Handlebar in Kensington Market is a great bar with a relaxed, but inviting atmosphere. The space is welcoming, open, and unpretentious. They boast a killer cocktail list, a pretty decent selection of beers, and a new menu of pub food favourites and delicious nibbles to snack on while you’re gaming!

Thursday are shaping up to nerd nights at Handlebar too – they run NintendoKnights on the 1st Thursday of every month, and Tassels and Tabletop will be taking the 3rd Thursdays of the month.

Nerd Girl Burlesque - Tassels and Tabletop at Handlebar

We’re so excited to start this new chapter in NGB’s history. Come join us on December 18th for the 1st edition of T&T at Handlebar, which also happens to be Loretta Jean’s Birthday Spectacular with special guests Ava Noir, Betty Quirk, Leelando Calrissian and sketch comedy by The Rocket Scientists. Upcoming goodness: Clue & Pick A Card!

July 3rd, 2014

Hello lovelies,

What can we say – we’ve been so busy of late that we’ve barely had a minute to stop, reflect and write it down.

This past weekend we performed once again at Pride Toronto (or should we say World Pride – yeah it was kind of a big deal). We had lots of fun, even if it was a very hot (and sweaty) time! That 3:30 PM sun is very unforgiving, but we still gave it our all, in spite of the oppressive heat.

In the near future we’ve got two very exciting things in the works. (Well actually, we have many more things that we can’t reveal just yet, but two awesome things we can tell you about right now.)

First up: We’re doing our first, all-new show in about a year!

Nerd Girl Burlesque is very pleased to announce Tassels and Tabletop: Clue.

Tassels and Tabletop: Clue | Nerd Girl Burlesque

All of the evening’s acts are inspired by the classic murder mystery board game, Clue, which has inspired movies, television shows, and a cult following. As with all editions of T&T, gaming will follow the show.

We’ll be doing two dates for T&T: Clue, first we’ll be in Ottawa on July 11, and back home in Toronto on July 18.

The evening’s murder investigation in Toronto will be lead by Great Canadian Burlesque’s The Canadian Wolfman, playing the part of police detective and host. The Ottawa edition will be hosted by Games for All gaming aficionado Jordan Richer.

The Cast of Tassels and Tabletop: Clue.

Our cast of suspects include: NGB’s own Delicia Pastiche as Mrs. White, Helen of Tronna as Colonel Mustard, and Loretta Jean as Professor Plum.

Additional would-be murderesses include special guests from Ottawa, Miss Helvetica Bold (Rockalily Burlesque) as Mrs. Peacock and Jolie Stripes as Miss Scarlett. Titus Androgynous of Toronto’s The Yes-Men: A Drag King Collective will round out the suspect list as Mr. Green, with a delicious drag performance.

Second piece of exciting news: We’re returning Michigan!

The other exciting thing that’s in the works for us is the tarot-themed show in Ann Arbor, Michigan that we’ve been invited to perform in. Pick A Card: A Burlesque Exploration of Tarot is set to be a truly original show that blurs the lines between performance art and burlesque. The show is set to take place in September 2014 at the beautiful and historic Michigan Theater.

You can read more about this fabulous project on Burlesque Bitch, but we think the line-up kind of speaks for itself.

Gala Delicious - Pick A Card: A Burlesque Exploration of Tarot | Nerd Girl Burlesque

Gala Delicious – Pick A Card: A Burlesque Exploration of Tarot

Pick A Card is a collaborative effort led by Gala Delicious of The Tickled Fancy Burlesque Co. The show’s headliner is 2010 Queen of Burlesque, Roxi D’Lite of Windsor, Ontario. The show also boasts some of the cream of Chicago’s burlesque scene including: burlesque powerhouses Red RumDahlia Fatale, and Cruel Valentine. There’s also local Michigan phenomenons and Ann Arbor favourites Dolly DaggerLushes LaMoanLuna LegareAnnie Thing, and many more which are still to be announced!

There’s now just 13 days left in the Kickstarter campaign to help make Pick a Card a reality. This fabulous show is an ambitious project and cannot happen without your support!

There are some amazing perks up for grabs, both for those who are able to attend the show and those who cannot. Delicia Pastiche is offering some custom made g-string and crystal pasties. Loretta Jean has donated several tarot readings. There’s also original art by E. Woobury Rand up for grabs, as well as t-shirts, prints of the custom tarot cards (in the likenesses of the performers) being created for the show – and lots of other awesome perks too!

To all of of our awesome friends and fans, we so appreciate your love and support. Until next time! ♥

A year in review: NGB’s Spectacular Summer Spectacular!

March 27th, 2014

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Heeding the advice of the brilliant Ferris Bueller, Nerd Girl Burlesque has decided to take a brief moment, catch a breath, and catch you all up on some of the great things that have happened this past year!

In May 2013, the ladies were invited to model at Toronto’s Oasis Aqualounge in a sexy boudoir photography class led by two of our favourite local photographers, Photolena and Mopo Art. Experienced and new photographers shot the girls in different wardrobe throughout the venue, and the gals got a change to show off their modelling skills!

In June, Loretta Jean and Delicia Pastiche participated in The Underground Peepshow’s Tarantino Tease, a salut to the movies of Quentin Tarantino. Loretta Jean did a fantastic ode to Mr. Blonde from Reservoir Dogs, complete with a giant razor blade and a gas can full of glitter. Delicia’s homage was to The Bear Jew, Donny Donowitz, Eli Roth’s character in Inglorious Basterds.

Later that month, Nerd Girl Burlesque were thrilled to once again grace the Viagara Village Stage at Toronto Pride. With the Yes Men’s Brian Bedside Manor as host, the girls wowed the enthusiastic crowd who were filled with energy after Sunday’s parade. Afterwards, they took a dip in Delicia’s pool to cool down in the first of what has become a series of showgirl swimming parties!

July was the Nerd Girl’s fabulous ode to the small screen with their show, Boob Tube! The Girls sent up a variety of shows, including Doctor Who, Adventure Time, and Breaking Bad at Baltic Avenue on Bloor Street. Group numbers, duets, and solos abounded, as well as a great guest act from Great Canadian Burlesque’s Fionna Flauntit, who performed her fantastic I Love Lucy routine.

Finally, the ladies capped off the summer with a stint at Fan Expo, Canada’s largest fan convention. The girls got to meet with fans from across North America, as well as cosplay throughout the four day long event.

So you got to hear what the ladies of Nerd Girl Burlesque got up to in the summer. Want to know how they kept warm all winter? Stay tuned for our next blog update!

Bella’s Burlesque Birthday Bash: Dirty Thirty Dance Party

March 19th, 2013

Bella's Burlesque Birthday: Dirty Thirty Dance Party | Nerd Girl Burlesque

Our very own burlesque darling and handbell maestro Bella Fox has completed another lap around the sun. She’s inviting everyone to come celebrate with her the only way she knows how – with a nerdy burlesque show of epic proportions, complete with live musical accompaniment by The Cocksure Lads, local girl rock outfit High Heels Lo Fi, and the charming Pavlov’s Dogs Handbell Ensemble.

Nerd Girl Burlesque (NGB) is very pleased to once again be participating in the show. Our troupe members including Ms. Fox, will be taking to the stage in a number of nerd culture nostalgia inspired numbers including odes to Batman and Robin, Nintendo video games, the Spice Girls and many more!

The 4th annual event is at a bigger and better venue, the legendary Lee’s Palace on Bloor Street West. Also performing alongside NGB are veteran burlesque performers Lucky Fremont – The Downtown Experience (Founder of Hamilton’s Boudoir Rouge Burlesque) and Ginger Rigby (of Detroit’s Hell’s Belles Girlie Revue).

Featured band The Cocksure Lads will provide a special, live acoustic set. You’ll recognize Murray Foster and Mike Ford of as long-standing icons of the Canadian folk music scene with bands such as Moxy Früvous and Great Big Sea. Now as The Cocksure lads they are channeling the spirit of swingin’ sixties Brit-pop at the peak of the British Invasion.

High Heels Lo Fi sound like if Joan Jett was kicked out of the Ramones’ Rock n’ Roll High School for being drunk and acting like theclass clown. Want to hear brilliant rock music? Go see AC/DC. Want to be peer-pressured into singin’ along, drinkin’, dancin’ and laughin’ yer arse off with yourfriends? Come see High Heels Lo Fi.

After the show, stick around for a late night dance party with the performers! We hope to see you there!

Advance tickets are $15, available in person at the Silver Snail (329 Yonge St.) or online via Brown Paper Tickets. Admission at the door is $20.

For more info & event updates, see the Facebook event.

British Invasion Angie Bee Buttons (Limited Edition)

November 16th, 2012

Just a quick update for now, our own Bella Fox is a very talented illustrator and designer. Bella created our logo lady, who we affectionately refer to Angie Bee (get it? – yeah I know, a bit groan worthy but we have a very punny sense of humour.)

For our upcoming British Invasion show, Bella created new variants of Angie and we’re having them fantastically printed into buttons by GeekBadge (they’re awesome, check ’em out).

This sweet NGB swag is limited edition and only available while quantities last! Click on the images to see them larger, there’s some really cute details in each one.

Bella also created some really cute caricatures of each of the NGB ladies that we’ll post soon.  They will also be available in button format at our upcoming show!

This all so very exciting, can’t wait for the 23rd!

Plans Are Brewing, Some Pictures & Save the Date!

October 19th, 2012

Hello universe,

Apologies for neglecting this blog space. You wouldn’t know it from our lack of posts, but things have been quite busy behind the scenes for Nerd Girl Burlesque since our inaugural show.

First off – Book Club Burlesque was a huge success! There were a few minor kinks that we still need to iron out, but overall we’re really happy with how it went. When it comes down to it, isn’t that the beauty of live theatre though? Anything can happen in the midst of a performance, it’s pretty magical.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out the show. We felt overwhelmed with all of the support we received – we packed Goodhandy’s (now called Club 120), sold the show out, and had fun boogying the night away on the dance floor afterwards.

Harry Potter Group Act - Kenickie as Ravenclaw, Loretta as Slytherin, Bella as Gryffindor, Delicia as Hufflepuff | Nerd Girl Burlesque

Harry Potter Group Act – Kenickie as Ravenclaw, Loretta as Slytherin, Bella as Gryffindor, Delicia as Hufflepuff

Our friend Alex from If You Fall Photography took some great images of us at the show. You see the rest of the pictures on our Facebook Page.

Since wrapping up our first official show (though it feels weird to call it that, because we’ve all been performing together in the local burlesque scene for almost 3 years), we’ve been valiantly working away on planning our follow up.

We’re not quite ready to release all of the details yet, but we will very soon and good things come to those who wait!

We can tell you right it’s called NERD GIRL BURLESQUE presents… The British Invasion. The show is slated for Friday, November 23 – so please save the date!

In others news, we did a fabulous and ridiculously fun photo shoot with Photolena? We’ve posted a few teaser images on our Facebook page, we’ll have the full set up on the website soon.

We’ve updated our calendar with upcoming events and appearances. We’ll all be at Canadian Toycon in Burlington on November 4. There’s also some solo (and duo, or even trio appearances) slated for between now and the end of the year!

We really can’t wait to share all of the amazing plans that we have in store. Maybe it’s just the time of year – with Halloween just around the corner – but it really feels like things have a been a slow brew (perhaps in a giant cauldron),  figuring out all the ins and outs of getting a troupe up and running.

It will definitely all be worth it, mark our words: 2013 is going to huge and we’re so excited!

-Loretta Jean (& the NGB lovelies)

Nerd Girl Burlesque Presents BOOK CLUB BURLESQUE

August 6th, 2012

Nerd Girl Burlesque Presents BOOK CLUB BURLESQUE

Nerd Girl Burlesque is proud to announce their first official show: Book Club Burlesque.

Nerd Girl Burlesque is very excited to be presenting their first self-produced show, Book Club Burlesque, at Goodhandy’s in Toronto on Friday, August 17, 2012. Advance tickets are now one sale at Silver Snail for $12 (or $15 at the door). Tickets also available online through Eventbrite.

Nerd Girl Burlesque (NGB) brings together the talents, brains and beauty of founding members Bella FoxDelicia PasticheKenickie StreetLoretta Jean and Meryle Trouble. Soon after the NGB’s inception, Ruby Pixel  joined the troupe’s ranks to round out the dyanmic ensemble. These ladies have been performing together informally since 2009-2010, but now as a troupe are an unstoppable force!

With this show you can look forward to a night of literary-inspired themed acts, ranging from classic English literature (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) to contemporary best-sellers (The Hunger Games) and also beloved children’s books (Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham.)

Book Club Burlesque is being hosted by the always hilarious Mike Drach, and will also feature special guest acts from Sevvy Skellington (The Undergound Peepshow), Pavlov’s Dogs Handbell Ensemble, and magic by Lukas Stark.

NGB’s style can be described as playful, comedic, kitschy and of course – nerdy. Burlesque is at it core, satire mixed with sexy, and that is exactly what you’ll get at an NGB show!

Each member of NGB has a variety of nerdy interests. Some of these interests fit neatly within the categories of nerd and fandom culture, while other hobbies and intellectual pursuits are bit more esoteric. NGB aims to reclaim the words ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ by celebrating them and turning them on their heads.

NGB shows are smart, sassy and engaging. Some people would label NGB’s style as nerdlesque, which is the troupe’s specialty, but acts on the troupe’s roster also span the neoburlesque, neoclassical, vaudeville and performance art spectrum.

For more information please contact Nerd Girl Burlesque directly – email: info [at] nerdgirlburlesque [dot] ca.
